Welcome to the very first post of my substack newsletter.
I heard about substack last night whilst watching an online conference and as someone who is drawn to the new and shiny, I thought I’d give it a go.
I am a huge believer in the power of emails, in fact it has always been central to my marketing activities everywhere I’ve worked. I spent 20 years working in magazines on circulation and subscription strategies and also running events, awards and conferences. The magazine industry relies almost entirely on email marketing to deliver paying customers.
So, it was a bit of a shock to land in the book business and learn that email was such a low priority. This was something I addressed at HarperCollins UK and surprise, surprise, the new emails I launched sold books!
Of course, BookBub came along and showed everyone how to sell books through targeted emails in huge numbers and kudos to them.
I will talk about email marketing as well as other effective, measurable and targeted marketing tactics. I hope you find this newsletter of value and once again, my huge thanks for signing up.
